International Advocacy and Women's Political Participation
FIMI helps Indigenous women activists effectively confront the tremendous hurdles they face in their struggle to make their voices heard. FIMI facilitates their participation at regional meetings and UN conferences and promotes their work through advocacy and media initiatives. In this way, FIMI works to incorporate Indigenous women's perspectives into human rights and development processes and norms, ensuring recognition of their demands, respect for their rights, and implementation of long-awaited changes.
Objectives:
- Accompany, advise and provide technical assistance to Indigenous women, who share FIMI's priorities and who can represent Indigenous women's concerns in local and national government.
- Strengthen relationships with key women's networks and organizations—such as AWID, CWGL, and the Global Fund for Women—in order to generate greater spaces for dialogue between the Indigenous women's movement and the global women's movement.
- Work with UNIFEM, UNDP, and other specialized UN agencies to develop programs with Indigenous women.
- Monitor recommendations of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, Commission on the Status of Women, the UN reform process, Human Rights Council, Security Council and the Millennium Development Process.
- Implement media outreach activities to raise awareness about Indigenous women's rights, including press conferences, publications, and speaking engagements.
Over the past 10 years, FIMI has also been an active participant in the Beijing Process.
